We have been going through the same things with hexavalent chromium.
I agree that welders working at different sites on a day-to-day basis can be more difficult because the standard of engineering controls can differ so much. It is a problem for us because many of our welders work in confined spaces with limited air flow.
With regard to respirators for use in such situations, it comes down to the personal preference of the wearer in terms of brands and types.
We use Powered Air-Purifying Respirators (PAPR) and Supplied Air respirators. Both have their disadvantages. In hot environments, the PAPR can be uncomfortable because it is circulating warm air in the mask. The supplied air respirators have the obvious drawback of a trailing air line.
Suggest you contact MSA, 3M, Scott etc and ask them about respirators for hexavalent chromium and give your welders different types to try.
